Design

One of the most popular balls of this year’s World Series of Bowling, the Marvel™ Pearl was preferred by Ryan Shafer, Dom Barrett, and many more looking to open up the backends. The new Modern Marvel will provide more midlane traction as it features a textured R2X™ hybrid reactive cover.

Prepped with 4000-grit Abralon® to match the “modern” environment, the Modern Marvel provides an optimum amount of traction throughout the entire lane; just enough glide through the heads without over-skidding and enough backend to verify you are indeed throwing a Storm bowling ball.

The Centripetal™ core’s symmetrical shape provides countless drilling options. So feel free to drop your favorite layout in the Modern Marvel as this shape has quickly become one of the favorites of players around the globe. And if you are looking for something a touch different than what you already have, be sure check out the Storm symmetrical drilling guide as you’re sure to find exactly what you need.

With this outstanding combination of coverstock and core, you’ll quickly see why this new release from Storm is sure to become a true modern marvel.

Hello all and thanks for reading. The video that goes with this video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM7mBXeL6aw&list=UUUdapKcbpNzp3PGwdo7P6GQ&index=1&feature=plcp

What can I say about the Modern Marvel. Great ball. For those of you who have had the pleasure of throwing the Prodigy and always thought there was something missing like a little bit more backend motion, well you are in luck. All the strength of the Prodigy with the backend reaction like you are on a fresh oil with a crisp dry final 20 feet of backend.

In the video you can see I compare to the a Marvel Pearl with a low pin. The Pearl gets down the lane easily with a much smoother backend move due to a lower pin and lower RG drilling. The Modern being a hybrid coverstock gets down the lane just as easily even with a more rough box surface and as you can see picks up a much stronger midlane roll before turning left. I needed to keep the Modern Marvel more in the middle in the heavier oil and push the Marvel Pearl to the dry a little more to get them back to the pocket. The Modern Marvel is a great starter ball on the fresh oil and can help cut through the heaviest of oil patterns. The core of this entire series has been a great addition to the Storm lineup and continues to is great success with the Modern Marvel. Lower Rev Rates or higher speed bowlers benefit greatly from using this ball on the fresh and can certainly become a benchmark for someone who is slightly speed dominant. This is a great piece for anyones arsenal, great job to Storm once again.

COMMENTS

Likes: The Modern Marvel has great midlane roll and strong arc on the backend. This is a very strong overall ball from Storm. With the Centripetal™ core’s symmetrical shape allows the ball to glide through the heads without over skidding and going through the breakpoint. Very controllable backend motion with great hitting power. The Modern is great compliment to the
Marvel Pearl, as when the pearl goes to long then the Modern is great fit.
I had to apply Storm Step 2 compound to throw it on our THS. But on sport patterns where this ball
rolled the best for me. As the Modern allowed me to stay just to left of the friction and be able to continue
to have the pocket.
Great product from Storm... You have great overall hook from a symmetrical core, wrapped in the R2X Hybrid Reactive coverstock.

This ball is STRONG. It needs a longer pattern or higher volume to be truly effective. The pattern I threw it on was a relatively medium pattern and the Modern Marvel wanted to read the fronts off my hand. The reaction is very smooth thanks to the lower RG core so I was able to migrate left and not over react off the hook spot. Because the ball is so strong on the medium volume it did tend to labor a little. I think on a heavier volume of oil or with bowlers who are speed dominant the Modern Marvel will perform extremely well.

After loving my Marvel and Marvel Pearl, I was looking forward to the Modern Marvel. It features the same core as the first two of it's line, but with a Hybrid coverstock. If you have read my previous reviews, you would know that I love Hybrid coverstocks. It really gives you the best of both worlds, and has very little downside.

I drilled mine with a 4 1/8" pin, 5" MB, and a 3 3/4" pin buffer. This layout is designed to combat over/under reaction, and to work with my newly drilled Storm Crossroad with a similiar layout. This ball does exactly that. By drilling it with a high flare pin location, and a high flare MB location, the core does not over read the end of the pattern by any means. The coverstock will pick up a little in the mid-lane, but the on lane hook is toned down to increase power into and through the pin deck. With a different layout, this ball could probably hook from one side of the lane to the other, but that isn't what I drilled mine to do. You can see in my video that the ball still hooks a decent amount, but it hits the pins HARD and pushes through them like they aren't even there. I am able to come in a little light or a little heavy, and still carry most the time because of a lack of deflection and an increase in pin action.

With a normal layout, I believe this ball would react more like the Marvel than the Marvel Pearl. The coverstock will read the mid-lane, even through a decent amount of oil. I threw mine on the 2012 Nationals pattern, and was amazed to see it pick up in the middle of the lane with that high of volume. I get a smooth arc out of the Hybrid coverstock, and the core is capabale of a massive amount of power. If you bowl at multiple different bowling centers, Hybrid coverstocks will get you hook in the centers with more oil, but not overhook at the centers with less oil. This ball is going to suprise a lot of people!

The Modern Marvel is a hybrid of the Marvel and Marvel Pearl using the R2X hybrid cover. I drilled the Modern Marvel the same as my Marvel Pearl with the pin above my middle finger and the CG slightly kicked out. The Modern Marvel did not need a balance hole so I chose to leave it without one. I left it at box finish as well.

I was excited for this ball because I have recently had a lot of success with the Marvel Pearl and figured this would be a nice compliment when that was too skid/flippy. Both Marvels roll really good for me, so I figured this one had to as well.

My first three games out of the box with the Modern Marvel were all above 250 (two different bowling centers). I was surprised at how much it hooked, but it didn’t have any problems getting through the front like the Marvel sometimes did. I have used it on a few different patterns and on Brunswick and AMF synthetics. What surprised me the most was my ability to get deeper inside and not lose entry angle. As strong as the ball is, normally when I am forced to move left I have to ball down, but I did not have to with this one. It still got through the front of the lane clean enough to maintain hitting power down lane.

The Modern Marvel will be a great benchmark ball that can be used on a variety of patterns. It will be the first ball out of my bag and allow me to see what the pattern is doing and adjust accordingly. Ideally it will be for heavier patterns or flatter patterns such as the Masters and Open Championships when you need to control the break point but maintain hitting power.
